Tips for Swimming Pool Maintenance

The 4th of July is a week away!

Is your pool ready for the big day?

You’ve got a week to get it done, which is plenty of time. Here are some tips to make sure your pool is ready for the 4th of July and all summer long.

Pool Water Level

Check to make sure the water level is correct, so that the skimmer can work properly to remove debris. If you need to add water, make sure you do so on your watering day as regulated by the City Water Department during the California Drought.

Water Balance

Whether you use a salt or chlorine system, you need to make sure the water levels are properly balanced so that germs and bacteria are being killed, but also for the swimmer to be comfortable swimming and opening their eyes in the water. Pick up a pool water test kit at your local swimming pool supplier to check the levels or call your local swimming pool maintenance professional. Unbalanced pH levels can also cause scale buildup on your tiles. Although this is not a health risk, it affects the beauty of your pool. To prevent buildup, test your water and make adjustments to your water as needed, then you can remove by scrubbing with a pool brush, sponge and tile cleaner specifically designed for pools.

 Vacuuming Your Pool

As funny as this sounds, yes you need vacuum your pool. Most people have an automatic swimming pool cleaner, so this maintenance is easy. It’s important to make sure your pool vacuum is working so that unwanted debris at the bottom of the pool can be removed. This allows for swimmers to have a better pool experience.

Clean the Skimmer and Pump Basket

Clean the skimmer and pump basket on a regular basis. The pump will not filter your pool water properly if the baskets are full of debris and this can also cause your pump to work harder than necessary to cycle the water. Cleaning both once a week is best.

Filter Maintenance

Most pool filters will only need maintenance every 3-5 months. Look at the directions for your specific model, but you need to take out the filter and clean it. We use Hayward SwimClear Filters and you can look at the manuals online if you need help.

Don’t forget to have fun with your family and friends on the 4th of July.
