Cozy Backyard for Fall and Winter

Cozy Backyard for Fall and Winter

What makes a backyard cozy for fall and winter?

Fireplaces and fire pits definitely help, but there are more considerations. In Southern California, we have great weather making our backyards usable all-year-round. Anyone can walk into their backyard, but if it’s not comfortable, then do you really want to use it? Here are a few tips to make your backyard cozy for fall and winter.

  • Spa. Seems like common sense, but make sure you build a spa in addition to your swimming pool. It’s so nice to enjoy a hot spa in the winter months, especially in the evenings and you don’t have the huge cost of warming your swimming pool.

  • Swimming pool…heater! It may cost a bit, but you can heat up your swimming pool for special occasions and enjoy a warm dip any time of year.
  • Fireplace and fire pit. Fires are a sure way to make evenings cozier. When you’re warm, you are likely to be cozy. We have built large fireplaces, round fire pits, and modern long narrow fire pits…there are so many options and you can view more here

  • Seating. Comfortable outdoor seating. This can be built-in seating around a fire pit or patio furniture that you add once construction is done. Whichever you choose, make sure it is comfortable. Cushions are great for a pop of color and for comfort!

  • Keep entertainment nearby. Sitting and talking is great for relationships, but sometimes you need some entertainment. Keep a basket of games nearby for people of all ages, you could do anything from conversation starter cards to UNO to scrabble. Pick things for your family to enjoy and rotate them every month or so. We can also design an area for your TV to be installed outside under the patio cover.
  • Blankets. Have certain blankets set aside for outside to use when it starts to get chilly. You can keep them in a basket outside or simply right inside the house in a cabinet.
  • Make it special. Have Friday night pizza on the patio and end with a dip in the spa. Hot chocolate and coffee on Saturday mornings while you relax.
  • Other considerations. If you live in a windy area, we may need to add a wind block. This house (below) has an enclosed patio with glass walls surround it that can open up!
